The Sum of Your Life

I just returned yesterday from a quick 24 hour, 600 mile trip to my former church. I went there to be part of the funeral of one of the pillars of that church. The occasion was sad but also an opportunity to think back and reflect on a life well lived.
As I prepared my message, More >

In Just a Few Months . . .

These are photos of our small lake. Both were taken from the same location. One was taken in the summer of 2009, the other today.
With just a few months between, the view is vastly different. From the summer, you can almost feel the warmth and hear the birds singing. There’s the color of life. From More >

My Two Cents for Pastors

I read this yesterday and got a miserable feeling in my gut. Such tragic, tragic news. I didn’t know this pastor and I don’t know any circumstances surrounding his death. But it still hurts. Almost every week I hear of another pastor taking his own life, having an affair, or leaving the ministry altogether.

The Need for Depth

The first Sunday of February I started a new sermon series. I don’t have a catchy title for the series. I just call it doctrine. This series is all about the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. In my 10+ years as a pastor, I’ve become acutely aware of most Christian’s lack of a basic More >

How I Spent My Sunday

I had a good day today. Started off with the worship service at LifePointe. Here’s a picture of the band practicing before the service.

We had a good full crowd and a good service. The music was off the hook. I delivered one of my most difficult messages: The Trinity. I hope it didn’t come off More >

The Real World of Ministry

Here’s an extraordinary video that puts some perspective on the world we live in today. How do we penetrate this real world with the good news of Jesus Christ? It ain’t the 1950s any more.

Historic Day

Whether you’re white or black, democrat or republican, you have to agree that today is an historic day for the United States.
I’ve been watching and listening to the reactions I hear down here in Mississippi. There have been the expected remarks from some, but they really are in the minority. Generally, there is anticipation and More >

Reactive or Proactive?

I was listening to the latest podcast from Catalyst the other day, featuring Andy Crouch. (By the way, listening to the Catalyst podcast is required listening for every church planter, pastor, or church leader. REQUIRED! Really, it is, look it up . . .) Andy has a new book, titled Culture Making: Recovering Our Creative More >

Sad Obituary

I found this obituary posted over at Brant’s Blog of Awesomeness. It would be so sad if this was the only memory you left for your family.

Snow in Northeast Mississippi

We had snow Friday night in northeast Mississippi. We had to take some quick pictures of it, because it didn’t last long.

This is Lauren, my daughter’s attempt at a snowman. Don’t be fooled by its apparent size. Lauren built it on my truck toolbox and the snowman is really about 9 inches tall.

It was really More >

Flu

Next year I get a flu shot.
Last Wednesday night, we had our Survival Kit Bible Study kick off, with somewhere over 30 people present. I didn’t feel real good that day and by the time I got home I was hurting all over. It went downhill from there. Long story short – Sunday was the More >

Sickness and Thinking

I’ve been under the weather for most of the past three days. I’m slowly coming out of it, but I still feel pretty puny. When I’m sick like this, my mind always wonders to the things I need to be doing, like right now. I’m always thinking and when there’s nothing else to do, my More >
