The first Sunday of February I started a new sermon series. I don’t have a catchy title for the series. I just call it doctrine. This series is all about the basic doctrines of the Christian faith. In my 10+ years as a pastor, I’ve become acutely aware of most Christian’s lack of a basic understanding of the faith they claim.
I think it’s important that, as a church, and specifically, as preachers, we address the topics of family, marriage, sex, and other hot topics currently highlighted in many churches. I have and will continue to build series on these and other topics. But, I believe there has to be that foundation of doctrine there first to build the rest upon. We can preach messages such as “God’s Views on Sex,” but, who is this God offering the views? To some He’s the little ol’ bearded man sitting “upstairs.” To others He may be an angry person waiting to strike us down with a horrible, agonizing death at our first mistake. Before we can correctly understand God’s views on a particular subject, we need to have a correct understanding of God Himself.
Brad Waggoner has done some research concerning this topic of spiritual depth and spiritual formation. He’s written a book, The Shape of Faith to Come, presenting his research and suggestions for improvement. I have the book but have not yet read it, although I plan to soon. But I did find this video of Brad being interviewed about the subject and found it both troubling and interesting. Please take a few minutes and listen to this great interview.
So far, my doctrine messages seem to be well received. In fact, I’m finding that many are really excited to go down this road. They’ve heard bits and pieces of all this before, but most have never had it thoroughly explained. There’s something exciting about knowing what you believe and why you believe it.
More “relevant” series will be coming soon. But now relevancy will have a foundation, in God and the foundations of our faith. That’s a good place to build on.
